Lounder’s Boathouse was built in 1913 and has been the continuous home of Popeye. The timber building was in need of conservation and adaptation before it risked collapsing. Mulloway Studio created an innovative way to retain as much of the original building as possible
by ‘slipping’ a new building into the existing one. The original fabric and character of the building remains largely intact while providing a base building that is compliant with current building code standards.
Conserving the home of Popeye
Located along Victoria Drive/Karrawirra (Park 12), Lounder’s Boathouse is the last operational industrial building on the Torrens Lake. The historic building now ensures the continued boat operation of ‘Popeye’ whilst providing a cafe for visitors. Interpretive elements throughout the
building help to share the history of this wonderful building.
